The mammals that used to live on Earth had in common their organization into social groups. Perhaps social groups gave some sort of evolutionary advantage, perhaps the animals simply enjoyed to share their joys and sorrows.
"Now", James reflects, "there is no need for this - belonging to a social group gives me no benefits either evolutionary or otherwise".
And James has a point. The gene AI decides who are allowed to mate (those lucky bastards). Your income credits are pre-determined. So why this longing, this longing to belong to a group? And once identifying with the group, the hunt for positions in that group, in all its absurdity?
